• Any crib in the market today will comply with industry and voluntary safety standards.  These standards ensure that the crib you purchase will be safe, and will regulate features like the space between each slat and hidden hardware. 
• Select a crib with an adjustable mattress height so that when your baby grows, it can be repositioned to the proper level.  Make sure this feature is child proof.
• Check to see if any hardware are properly hidden to prevent accidental scratching.
• Crib mattresses should sit flush against the sides to eliminate any extra room that could lead to injury or harm
• Cribs should be strong and stable, not wobbling or shaking
• Select paints and finishes that are lead-free and non-toxic
• Register your crib with its manufacturer so in case there are recalls, you can be contacted first hand.
• Position the crib in a safe distance from windows in the event of storms, etc.  Ensure that baby won't be disturbed by direct sun or street light.
• If its an option, choose hardwood or laminate floors with area rugs rather than wall-to-wall carpeting.  Not only will it be easier to clean, but it will also cut down on allergy-aggravating dust.
• Plan for lots of storage.  While it may seem you have enough space, soon you may need extra places for blankets, accessories, and, of course, toys.
• Color your baby's world with mobiles, toys, and stuffed animals.
